Pasadena, California: Saint Andrew Church

About Saint Andrew Church in Pasadena, California:

St. Andrew Church in Pasadena, California, is known for its stunning architecture and rich history. Founded in 1886, it is the oldest Catholic parish in the city and one of the oldest in Los Angeles County. The current church building, completed in 1927, is an architectural masterpiece designed by architect Ross Montgomery in collaboration with Monsignor John McCarthy.

Its design draws inspiration from two churches in Rome: the interior mirrors the Basilica of Santa Sabina (built in 432 A.D. in Rome), while the façade and Romanesque Revival campanile bell tower replicate Santa Maria in Cosmedin.

The church is celebrated for its Byzantine-style interior, featuring magnificent murals by Italian painter Carlo Wostry, completed in 1935, which have been praised as some of the finest in the Americas. The 140-foot bell tower is a prominent feature of Pasadena’s skyline and can be seen for miles.

The interior features marble columns, stained glass windows, and a white Carrara marble altar.

Saint Andrew Church offers Masses in English and Spanish and also features also concerts on a fairly regular basis (see their website for details).
