About Plattsburg, Missouri:

Plattsburg, Missouri is a small city of approximately 2,222 (2020 census); part of the Kansas City, Missouri metropolitan area in northwest Missouri.  Originally named Concord in 1833, then changed to Springfield, and finally renamed Plattsburg in 1835 (after Plattsburgh, New York).

The area was part of the Platte Purchase, opened to settlement after Native American tribes (including Ioway, Meskwaki, and Sac) ceded land. Early settlers came mainly from the Upper South (Kentucky and Virginia), bringing Southern culture and, initially, enslaved labor for hemp and tobacco production.

During the Civil War, the town saw divided loyalties and minor engagements, including the Battle of Plattsburg (July 21, 1864), where Union forces repelled Confederate guerrillas. A statue of “President for a Day” David Rice Atchison (U.S. Senator who lived and is buried here) stands at the Clinton County Courthouse.

The town features many preserved Victorian-era and historic homes from the late 19th/early 20th century. It was once known for cultural institutions like a Methodist college and an opera house.Housed in an 1889 home at 308 S. Birch St. , Clinton County Historical Museum features period furnishings, artifacts, and exhibits on local history.
