Des Moines, Iowa: Saint Anthony Catholic Church

About Saint Anthony Catholic Church in Des Moines, Iowa:

St. Anthony Catholic Church (also known as St. Anthony’s Parish) is a historic Roman Catholic parish in the Diocese of Des Moines, located on the south side of Des Moines, Iowa, in the heart of the historic “Little Italy” neighborhood.

Founded in 1906 by Bishop John Cosgrove to serve Italian immigrants, the parish began with Masses in an old fire station. The first dedicated church was a small brick building on Columbus Avenue. It transferred to the newly established Diocese of Des Moines in 1911. A school opened in 1912, staffed by the Congregation of the Humility of Mary, and grew to be one of the diocese’s largest by the mid-20th century.

The current Romanesque Revival brick church was constructed in 1931 under Pastor Rev. Cornelius Lalley. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2021, recognizing its deep Italian heritage and architectural significance. Recent efforts have included restoration of interior murals and artwork.
