About Caribou, Maine:
Caribou is the second largest city in Aroostook County, Maine. The population increased in the 20th century from 4,758 residents in 1900 to a peak of 12,464 residents in 1960 (according to the U.S. census). Since then, Caribou has experienced a long-term population decline due to major economic shifts such as the loss of agricultural and military industries.
Caribou, Maine, was primarily associated with the Cold War-era nuclear industry, specifically the Caribou Air Force Station (1951–1962), a restricted nuclear weapons storage and assembly facility, and a nearby Nike missile launching facility. It served as an Operational Storage Site (OSS) supporting the nearby Strategic Air Command (SAC) at Loring Air Force Base that closed in 1994, removing over 10,000 personnel and basically closing down the entire town. The former base now functions as the Loring Commerce Center and a Superfund site, with recent developments including a $60 million potato plant, an aviation maintenance firm, and green energy initiatives to revive the regional economy.
Although the population dropped to under 8,000 in recent years, Caribou remains a service center for the agricultural and tourism industries, as well as the location of a National Weather Service Forecast Office.
Due to the declining population, Caribou has had to do what many cities in a similar position have done: consolidate the congregations in to one parish and rotating among several churches for services. In this case, the parish was named The Parish of the Most Precious Blood.
