The Cathedral of Saint Mary (Catedral de Santa María), also known as Chiclayo Cathedral, serves as the seat of the Diocese of Chiclayo. Located in the city’s main square, Parque Principal, it is a key landmark reflecting both religious significance and architectural beauty.  Construction: began in February 1869, the cathedral was designed in a neoclassical style by Gustave Eiffel.  Financial constraints halted construction in 1871, and it resumed on February 13, 1928, with support from the Congress of the Republic. The cathedral was completed in 1939 and consecrated on December 7, 1959.

Notably, Robert Francis Prevost served here from 2015 to 2023, later becaming Pope Leo XIV in 2025.

Chiclayo, Peru CathedralThe neoclassical design features clean lines, symmetry, and monumental Doric columns, reminiscent of Greek and Roman architecture. The facade has three elegant cedar archways and two bell towers.  The cathedral’s interior is spacious with three naves, large columns, and a simple yet elegant altar. Highlights include a carved statue of the “Cristo Pobre.”,  stained glass windows depicting Marian scenes crafted in Lima  and a prominent statue of the Virgin Mary, brought from Spain 500 years ago.

The Cathedral has four Bells named “Ave María,” “Asumpta,” “Mater Dei,” and “Gratia Plena” that were imported from Germany and transported via the Pomalca train.

The cathedral honors the Inmaculada Concepción, with a statue of “Santa María de los Valles de Chiclayo” atop the facade, tied to the city’s founding by Franciscan priests in the 16th century.  The cathedral is a central hub for Catholic devotion in Chiclayo, hosting daily masses and 24-hour adoration in its Blessed Sacrament chapel.

It attracts both worshippers and tourists, offering a peaceful retreat from the city’s bustle. Visitors note its unassuming yet inviting atmosphere compared to more ornate Peruvian churches.

The cathedral is a symbol of Chiclayo’s Catholic heritage, with features like the “Señor de los Milagros” image (now relocated) and vibrant local faith practices.

Dress Code: Modest attire required; no shorts or revealing clothing.
