Kagoshima, Japan: Cathedral of Saint Francis Xavier

About the Cathedral of Saint Francis Xavier in Kagoshima, Japan:

Saint Francis Xavier Cathedral has been destroyed and rebuilt several times. The current wooden building was constructed in 1949 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Saint Francis Xavier’s arrival. It was elevated to cathedral status in 1955 with the erection of the diocese by Pope Pius XII with the Bull Qua sollicitudine.

A more modern part of the cathedral includes stained-glass windows and a pipe organ.

The church also houses a museum containing artifacts related to Francis Xavier’s life and the history of Christianity in Japan, including a letter written by Francis Xavier and a small relic.

There is one Sunday Mass in English…be sure to check their website in advance.

Nearby, Xavier Park commemorates the arrival of St. Francis Xavier with a statue and remnants of a former stone church.
