French Territory: Saint Pierre and Miquelon

About Saint Pierre and Miquelon:

We preface this page with a note that, although part of France, the islands of Saint Pierre and Miquelon are in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and lie about 2,300 miles west of Brest. on mainland France, and only about 12 miles from from Point May, Newfoundland in Canada…once a part of the vast territory of New France that covered  much of the upper North American continent. It was formerly an overseas department, then a territorial collectivity with special status, and now it is an overseas collectivity.

Residents of the islands (around 2,800 as of 2024) are French citizens and the language spoken here is French. They elect their own Deputy to the National Assembly of France and participate in senatorial and presidential elections. The Euro is the currency, so the atmosphere is most definitely French.  Both Saint Pierre and Miquelon are part of The Diocese of La Rochelle in France.

Miquelon and Langlade are connected by an isthmus.   Miquelon is a small village of 500 inhabitants, mainly Acadian descendants.
Langlade, which is not occupied in winter, is home to some fishermen huts in summer time.
