About Seychelles:
Seychelles (officially the Republic of Seychelles) is an archipelago and sovereign country made up of 115 islands located in the western Indian Ocean, northeast of Madagascar. It is famous for its stunning white-sand beaches, lush vegetation, and diverse marine life.consisting of about 115 islands. It is the smallest country in Africa by both land area and population, known for its stunning beaches, granite boulders, lush tropical vegetation, rich biodiversity, and luxury tourism.
The history of Seychelles is unique, because the islands were entirely uninhabited until the mid-18th century. Since it had no native population, the archipelago was initially a refuge for pirates before being colonized by the French in 1770, then claimed by the British, and ultimately achieving independence from the United Kingdom on June 29, 1976 to become a thriving republic.
The capital, Victoria (on Mahé Island), is the smallest capital city in Africa, with a population of around 121,000–124,000 (2024–2026 estimates),
Languages spoken include English, French, and Seychellois Creole. The currency Seychelles rupee (SR). The preferred foreign currency is the Euro. U.S. dollars are accepted in Seychelles, but primarily for tourism-related services like hotels, excursions, and car rentals.
Seychelles has a stable democracy with good healthcare and education. The economy has a high GDP per capita compared to many other African countries. It is heavily reliant on sustainable, conservation-led tourism and fishing/tuna exports. It follows a high-value, low-volume tourism model, which emphasizes care of the environment. Seychelles is frequently ranked among the world’s best islands and beaches for its paradise-like scenery and unique flora/fauna.
The islands divide into two main groups: mountainous granitic inner islands (e.g., Mahé, Praslin, La Digue) with dramatic landscapes, and flatter coralline outer islands. Seychelles is a biodiversity hot spot with endemic species like the Coco de Mer palm (producing the world’s largest seed) and Aldabra giant tortoises. Many islands feature UNESCO sites, marine protected areas, and pristine coral reefs.
Pope John Paul II visited the Seychelles on December 1, 1986, the only Pope to ever visit the Seychelles. He made a historic, five-hour stopover in the island nation toward the end of a massive two-week pilgrimage across the Asian and Pacific regions. Despite torrential rain and a partially collapsed altar roof, he celebrated an outdoor Mass for thousands of attendees at the Popular Stadium on Mahé Island, just outside the capital city of Victoria. During his address, the Pope focused on the importance of family stability and marriage.
