The parish traces its roots to 1872 when Bishop Richard Whelan sent Rev. Thomas Quirk to organize Catholics in the area. The first Mass in the original building was offered in late October 1872.

A new combined church and school building on 13th Street was dedicated in 1889. A beautiful historic stone church with towers and stained glass, it is known for its welcoming congregation and active community life.

It has long emphasized Catholic education, with St. Joseph Catholic School established early on.
