About Martinsburg, West Virginia

Martinsburg is a city in Berkeley County, West Virginia, and serves as the county seat. It’s the largest city in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia and the sixth-most populous in the state. Martinsburg was an early settlement tied to the French and Indian War and Revolutionary eras.

It played a key role in the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad: the Martinsburg Shops and Roundhouse were major facilities (the Roundhouse is a notable historic site and National Historic Engineering Landmark).

During the Civil War Martinsburg changed hands multiple times and is home to Confederate spy Belle Boyd (her house is now a museum). Following the Civil War, Martinsburg was the site of the start of the Great Railroad Strike of 1877 (sometimes referred to as the Great Upheaval): a massive, spontaneous nationwide labor uprising sparked by the Baltimore & Ohio (B&O) Railroad’s decision to slash workers’ wages for the second time in a year. Beginning on July 14, 1877 in Martinsburg and lasting 52 days, it involved over 100,000 workers and halted about half of the nation’s freight traffic before being suppressed by federal troops.

Today the population of Martinsburg numbers about 18,773 in the city proper, although the metro area is part of the larger Hagerstown–Martinsburg region. The downtown historic district draws visitors with shops, restaurants, and events The city is growing and positioned as affordable with small-town charm but access to larger job markets (due to proximity to D.C./Baltimore metro influences). It has a mix of historic character, parks, and modern amenities.
