About Église catholique Saint-Aignan (Church of Saint Aignan) in Chartres, France

The Église Saint-Aignan (St. Aignan’s Church) in Chartres, France is Chartres’ oldest parish church, the first being built here around 400 A.D. It was rebuilt in the 16th century after fires and is renowned for its vibrant 16th/17th-century stained glass depicting local history, offering a unique contrast to the nearby Chartres Cathedral’s medieval glass.

Re-building in the 16th-century resulted in a blue/green nave decor, Romanesque elements like arches, and Gothic influences.

Église catholique Saint-Aignan is famous for its detailed, colorful 16th and 17th-century windows, showing different styles from nearby Chartres Cathedral’s 13th-century glass, including scenes of Saint Aignan laying the cornerstone of the church as well as Jonah and the Whale.

In addition to the stained glass windows, it holds a medieval goldsmithery, primitive mosaics, and 19th-century paintings.
