Poitiers, France: The Baptistry of Saint John

About the Baptistry of Saint John in Poitiers, France:

The Baptistère Saint-Jean is a Roman Catholic church here in Poitiers,  it is believed to be the oldest existing Christian building in France.  It is one of the most prominent examples of Merovingian architecture (The Merovingian Dynasty was the ruling family of the Franks from roughly 481 AD, when Clovis I ascended the throne of the Salian Franks until 751 Ad, when Childeric III was deposed and the Merovingians were replace by the Carolingian Dynasty as kings of France (known as Francia).

The building is rather plain from the outside, but the interior contains frescoes dating from the 12th, 13th and 14th centuries.  Somehow, they survived the excesses of the French Revolution and can be viewed today.  It also contains an octagonal baptismal pool, which was used for baptism by immersion until the 8th century, and is the reason it is called the Baptistry of Saint John.
