About Sister Mary Ward:
In 17th century England it was illegal to be Catholic…and exposure would result in certain death. A religious Sister, Mary Ward, helped found the Congregation of Jesus and opened this secret convent in 1686. The Congregation was dedicated to female education and was one of two congregations of religious sisters she helped to found. The other congregation is the Sisters of Loreto, a name they shared until recently, which is also spread widely around the world.
Following Mary’s death, the order founded the first schools for girls in the country- the second here at Bar Abbey. Today, there are more than 200 schools worldwide in Mary Ward’s name. Today, Bar Convent is the oldest active convent in the United Kingdom.
